Context

Priya has been accepted into a prestigious dance academy in Mumbai, but her parents want her to pursue an engineering degree. In this monologue, she confronts her father during a tense family dinner, revealing her inner conflict between duty and passion.

Setting

A modest dining room in a small-town Indian home. The sound of a ceiling fan whirs softly. Priya sits at the table, clutching her acceptance letter, her father’s stern face illuminated by a single overhead light.

The Script

(Priya stares at her plate, her voice trembling at first, then growing stronger.)

PRIYA:
Papa… aaj subah college se letter aaya. (Pauses, takes a deep breath.) Mumbai ki National Dance Academy ne mujhe scholarship di hai. Training… professional training.

(Her father slams his hand on the table. Priya flinches but continues.)

PRIYA:
Jaanti hoon, aapko yeh pasand nahi hoga. “Dance career nahi hota,” “Log kya kahenge?” (Mimics her father’s voice, then softens.) Par maine 12 saal se kathak seekha hai, Papa. Sirf “hobby” nahi… yeh meri zindagi hai.

(She stands abruptly, her chair screeching. Her voice cracks with emotion.)

PRIYA:
Jab bhi main naachti hoon… (Clenches her fist.) Mujhe lagta hai ki main woh nahi hoon jo sab dekhna chahte hain. Main khud ho jaati hoon. (Pauses, pleading.) Ek mauka do, na? Bas ek baar… apne dil ki sunne do.

(Silence. She picks up the letter, her resolve hardening.)

PRIYA:
Agar aap mana bhi kar den… (Looks him in the eye.) Toh main train mein baithkar Mumbai jaungi. Bhookhi rahungi, par naachungi. (Voice drops to a whisper.) Kyunki agar nahi naach payi… toh mar jaungi.

(She slams the letter on the table and exits. The fan’s hum fills the silence.)

Performance Tips for Indian Actors

  1. Emotional Layers: Start with vulnerability, then build to defiance. Let tears well up but don’t let them fall—Indian parents rarely reward overt crying.
  2. Physicality: Use small gestures—a trembling hand while holding the letter, a sudden straightening of the spine during the climax.
  3. Language Nuance: Code-switch naturally. Say “zindagi” with weight, but pronounce “professional training” in a clipped, rehearsed way (as if Priya has practiced this speech).
  4. Silence: Pause after “mar jaungi.” Let the threat linger.

Why This Works for Indian Auditions

  • Relatable Conflict: Mirrors the “passion vs. duty” struggle familiar to Indian youth.
  • Cultural Specificity: References family pressure, societal judgment (“log kya kahenge”), and the stigma around unconventional careers.
  • Showcases Range: Requires shifts from soft pleading to fiery resolve.

Customize It!

  • For Regional Auditions: Translate lines into Malayalam, Tamil, or Bengali.
  • For OTT/Film: Add more Hinglish. Example: “Papa, this isn’t just a hobby—it’s my calling!”
  • For Theater: Amplify gestures and vocal projection.
